I am a New Yorker. No matter where life takes me, I will always be proud to call myself a New Yorker. New Yorkers are straight forward, no nonsense people who tell the truth. New Yorkers are movers and shakers. New York helped make me the person I am today, Absolutely Abby. September 11th helped even more. On September 11th I was on a job interview for a position as the Director of Strategic Recruiting for a major sports franchise. I had been working for another company at the time for the past four years and was hoping to make a change as I had exhausted all of my growth opportunities. I left the interview and hopped on the subway just in time to hear about the planes hitting the World Trade Center, the building that my boyfriend of five months worked in. You can imagine my reaction. Fast forward a bit…I got engaged to my boyfriend a month later and then married a year after that. The Director of Strategic Recruiting job I applied for that day was put on hold permanently but I was promoted to Senior Director of Recruiting at my current company when a new VP was hired in my department. She is now one of my biggest fans and a fabulous mentor. When I think about 9/11 today, I think about how precious life is and how much we take it for granted. People's lives can change in a minute because of terrorism, horrific accidents or a health wake up call. We can't afford the luxury to sit around and wait for our current job situation to turn itself around. We must step up and do something about it. If you have an idea for an invention, if you always wanted to start a business, if you are an author in hiding, or if you have always wanted to work in a particular industry, take action today. If you don't know what you want to be when you grow up, don't be ashamed. Many of your friends are in the same boat. They just haven't told you yet. Here are three books you can read that will can help you decide… Absolutely Abby’s Advice: Don't wait for a wake up call like 9/11 to be your call for action. Take some time to assess what in your life is keeping you from the life you want. Then take action and stay on course no matter how many challenges you find along the way. So many people are available these days to help guide you down the path to success – you just have to ask. Reach for the stars starting today and you will find that they are closer than you think! |

As you know, today is the 8th anniversary of 9/11, the day that changed the lives of so many people. In thinking about my blog for today, I realized how many lessons can be gleaned from that day – lessons that are right in front of us all the time but we may not see them.
